Long-Term Ulcer Prevention: A Holistic Approach

Written by Briony Witherow MSc RNutr. FHEA

Preventing ulcers requires more than just dietary changes. A holistic approach considers stress reduction, management practices, and exercise routines.

Minimising Stress

Stress is a major factor in ulcer development. To reduce stress remember the three F’s – Friends, Forage and Freedom:

  • Provide regular turnout and social interaction.
  • Avoid abrupt changes in diet and routine.
  • Ensure access to forage at all times.

Smart Management Practices

  • Monitor for early signs of ulcers (weight loss, reduced appetite, girth sensitivity).
  • Adapt management to mimic natural grazing habits such as using slow feeders and providing a range of different forage types (creating diversity).
  • Offer pre-exercise fibre meals to protect the stomach lining.

Exercise Considerations

  • Avoid working horses on an empty stomach – feed fibre before exercise.
  • Balance intense workouts with rest periods to reduce stress.

Conclusion

A long-term ulcer prevention plan must include stress management, consistent forage intake, and careful exercise planning. By implementing these strategies, you can promote better digestive health and reduce the risk of ulcers in your horse.
